Kohtusime Kristjaniga esimest korda jaanuaris 2024. Kohe esimesest korrast tundsime küllap mõlemad mingit erilist kontakti. Selleni välja, et suvel 2024 kutsus Kristjan oma magistrieksamile kaasesinema. Hommikul EMTA poole astudes kuulsin keskturu juures ühe poolkuivanud kase otsast rähni toksimist. Need hääled kiskusid suunurgad ülespoole ja tõstsid tuju veelgi. Esinemise järel olin Kristjanilt küsinud, kas ta on valmis ühiselt midagi ka salvestama. Vastus oli täiesti soodne, mistõttu leppisin kohe kokku salvestusaja EMTA stuudios sama aasta augustis.

Kui salvestuspäeva hommikul bussijaamast EMTA poole astusin, nägin ebatavalise teeraja (Lastekodu tänaval käisid ju suured ehitustööd) ääres surnud kirjurähni. Kui stuudiosse jõudsin, rääkisin sellest ka Kristjanile, kes arvas, et pühendame ühe pala tollele linnule. Loitsuks nimetatud pala meenutab mulle isiklikult meie idapoolseid sugulasrahvaid. Sõna ’ülestõusmine’ on teatavasti kahetähenduslik ehk seda võib võtta religiooses ja argises võtmes. Kumba kuulaja eelistab, on tema valik. Mida aeg edasi, seda veendunumalt väidan, et midagi saavutada üksnes siis, kui sellesse suhtutakse kirega.

I met Kristjan for the very first time in January 2024. Both of us seemed to sense a special connection since the beginning. So much so that in the summer of 2024 Kristjan invited me to perform alongside him at his master recital. One morning, as I walked toward the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, I heard a woodpecker drumming from the top of a half-withered birch tree near the Central Market. The sound lifted both the corners of my mouth and my mood. After the performance, I asked Kristjan whether he might be interested in recording something together. His response was entirely positive, so we arranged a session in the EAMT studio for August of the same year.

On the morning of the recording, while walking from the bus station toward the Academy, I saw a dead great spotted woodpecker lying beside the makeshift footpath of Lastekodu Street that was undergoing major reconstruction. When I arrived at the studio, I told Kristjan about it, and he suggested that we’ll dedicate one of the pieces to the bird. The piece that we later called an incantation reminds me personally of our kindred peoples in the east. The word ülestõusmine (rising up, resurrection) is, of course, ambiguous – it can be understood in both a spiritual and a worldly sense. Which meaning the listeners prefer is entirely up to them. As time passes, I grow more and more convinced that one can only truly achieve something if one approaches it with passion.
